Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet is based on the hunter – gatherer diet.

There is no specific evidence for this diet in MS. Some of the principles below are appropriate for healthy diet among all populations.

The principles of the Paleo Diet –

  1. Higher protein intake – High Protein diet about 20-35% – Meat, seafood, and other animal source food.
  2. Lower carbohydrate intake and lower glycemic index – fruits and vegetables and food that have low glycemic index ( that is does not increase the sugar level in your blood rapidly). The foods that have low glycemic indices are slowly digested and absorbed, and won’t spike your blood sugar levels. For example oranges have high glycemic index – oranges increase your blood sugar level very quickly.
  3. Higher fiber intake – Dietary fiber is essential for good health.
  4. Moderate to higher fat intake mainly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats with balanced Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats – Avoid trans fats and Omega 6 polyunsaturated fats in your diet and increase monounsaturated fats and Omega 3 polyunsaturated fats.
  5. Higher potassium and lower sodium intake – Unprocessed food, fresh foods naturally contain 5 to 10 times more potassium than sodium.
  6. Net dietary alkaline load that balances dietary acid – Alkaline-yielding foods are fruits and vegetables. These promote healthier life.
  7. Higher intake of, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plant phytochemicals (Phytochemicals are plants products which act as protective substances against disease; they are present in vegetables, fruits, whole grains).
