Novantrone = Mitoxantrone

Novantrone is a medication given intravenously every 3 months. Novantrone showed effectiveness in relapsing and progressive forms of MS except for Primary Progressive MS.

Novantrone works in MS by suppressing the immune system and reducing the number of the immune cells.

Side effects: cardiotoxicity meaning affecting the heart in a way that may reduce the overall pumping ability of the heart, liver and blood counts effects requiring blood tests regularly, and potentially leukemia.

Novantrone is less prescribed today due to the cardiotoxicity potential effects and leukemia risk. The FDA requires that people who have been on Novantrone will have a heart scan (MUGA or Echo) annually throughout their life span.
